Removing hinderances

This year I committed myself to long distance running. Yes, running. I have never been a runner, but it has always been a goal of mine. Not only is it such a great workout, it reaps great rewards on your long term health. I started training in January and each and everytime I get on a treadmill or a track- it is a mental battle! And if I let myself, I will use every excuse to keep me from reaching my athletic goal. But one thing that I have learned in running is that you have to keep focused on your goal, and you have to get rid of anything that will keep you from that goal such as excess body weight, poor eating and improper running attire.

Last night I was reading in Galations 5...

"7 You were running a good race. Who cut in on you to keep you from obeying the truth? 8 That kind of persuasion does not come from the one who calls you. 9 “A little yeast works through the whole batch of dough.” 10 I am confident in the Lord that you will take no other view. The one who is throwing you into confusion, whoever that may be, will have to pay the penalty... 13 You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free."

It is so easy to lose sight and focus on the prize of Christ. Paul uses the illustration that we're all running in this lifelong race. Sometimes along the way we allow people and situations to cut in front of us and keep us from winning. And it doesn't take much to get us off track. It doesn't have to be anything "major" to make an impact. Whether it be my own attitude, the opinions of other people or a dissappointing situation- I never want to stop winning in this race of life. I want to always be in a position where letting go of those hinderances isn't a problem. I want to grasp onto my prize like the race has already been won and I'm holding the trophy in hand! With Jesus having gone before us, He made it known that we all can make it!

Let us all run without allowing the hinderances of life to hold us back. They'll always be there, but it's up to us to keep our focus on God.
"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us."

Make me over

Have you ever felt like it was time for a change? Not a new hairstyle, or a new wardrobe. I'm talking about something on the inside. Those old stale habits. A bad attitude. Or maybe more courage. Oh, and let's not forget healing. Maybe someone did you wrong, or you did someone wrong and you need forgiveness to activate in your life. I confidently raise my own hand because that's where I am now. As I grow and learn more and more about Christ, I also learn more about myself. But I understand it takes a lifetime to complete a journey of self awareness as we change from day to day. That's why I am so happy that my Lord and Saviour never changes- He's the one constant we can always depend on. His consistency is the perfect measuring tape for perfecting our lives in Him.

My prayer is that I push past myself to do what it takes to mature spiritually. "When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me."  1 Corinthians 13:11 Growing takes responsibility to make the proper Godly adjustments as needed by the leading of the Holy Spirit. Paul knew this as he uses the anology of childlike behavior. When we mature, we leave behind the old ways, the old habits, the old person to become a new creature in Christ. We never stop- we do it over and over again.

Today as you live, will you make the decision to allow God to do His perfect work within you? Let Him heal you, mend you and make you over again.

“The Lord will perfect that which concerneth me.” Psalm 138:8
